Working In The Studio

The Charleston Center for Photography very generously offered me their studio to work in, which was a perfect working environment. Plenty of space, great lighting equipment, and photographers to record the process. Most of the following pictures were taken by Laura Olsen.

The sketching was mainly done with charcoal.

Jack Alterman took this picture when I was doing the underpainting.

Then the color layers were applied using wall-painting brushes.

Paper towels are useful for scrubbing areas of paint off the canvas.

It's rare that I use a brush this small; it's really just for very detailed work.

The final stages of the painting were finished in my own studio.
